Professionals Australia welcomes implementation of Victorian engineer registration scheme

MEDIA RELEASE
Monday 28 June 2021

Professionals Australia is gearing up to support the implementation of Victoria’s professional engineer registration scheme to maintain high standards of engineering services and protect community safety.

Professionals Australia CEO Jill McCabe said the phased implementation of registration for professional engineers as from 1 July 2021 was an incredibly important reform that would have positive flow on benefits for years to come.

“We thank the Victorian Government for the work undertaken to make this much needed reform a reality and we will work hard to support the phased implementation of the registration scheme for professional engineers in Victoria.

“This registration scheme will ensure the skills and experience of engineers are of a high standard and that engineers receive the respect and recognition they deserve.

“The registration of engineers will strengthen the community’s confidence that only properly trained and registered professional engineers are undertaking professional engineering services in civil, structural, fire safety, electrical or mechanical engineering.

Ms McCabe said that many Victorians would be surprised to know that most Australian states, except for Queensland and now Victoria, do not have comprehensive engineer registration schemes.

“Unlike builders, architects and electricians there was no requirement for engineers working in Victoria to be registered. The Victorian Government’s engineer registration scheme, which is being phased in from 1 July 2021, will ensure engineers have the proper qualifications and experience, and that their skills are maintained through continuing professional development.”

The Victorian engineer registration scheme is a co-regulatory model where assessment of engineering skills and experience is undertaken through an approved assessment entity prior to the engineer applying for registration with the Victorian Government’s Business Licensing Authority.

Professionals Australia has been approved by the Business Licensing Authority as an assessment entity as part of the Victorian engineer registration scheme.

“We advocated strongly for the introduction of engineer registration in Victoria, and we’re extremely pleased to be part of this milestone reform for our members and the engineering profession in our state” Ms McCabe said.

Engineers who would like to be assessed by the Association of Professional Engineers Australia to become a registered professional engineer can apply here.
