ACT Engineering Registration Bill Introduced

Today, the ACT Government introduced the Professional Engineers Bill 2022 to the Legislative Assembly, bringing forward the first formal step in implementing a broad-based engineer registration scheme across the state.

This is a major reform that PA members have been campaigning for for several years now and we are thrilled to finally see these efforts paying off.

ACT Engineering Subdivision President, Matt Silleto and AGG Committee President, Dale McAllum, were in the Legislative Assembly today, 1 December 2022, for the introduction of the legislation and to meet with Minister Rebecca Vassarotti, who tabled the legislation.

We anticipate debate and the passage of the Bill will take place early next year, with a phased introduction of the scheme throughout 2023.

The ACT now joins Victoria and Queensland in having a comprehensive scheme for professional engineering registration and will hopefully act as a further catalyst for other jurisdictions to join in these efforts.

PA engineering members in the ACT Public Sector and Icon Water also continue to press claims for engineering registration support and recognition in their enterprise agreements, with the efforts of members there playing a key complimentary role in building professional recognition for engineers in the ACT.
